The power is useful for the one who knows how to use it. It’s a mere tool, like any other tool. It’s only that and nothing more. The problem arises when it falls into the incompetent or wrong hands, which is, unfortunately, more of a rule than a rarity. It’s something the Founding Fathers of the United States of America profoundly well understood, and build the robust system of governing in the United States, that was multiple times adjust but never fundamentally changed. The political, electoral, and judicial systems in the US are built to serve as the safety precaution from ad hoc inputs, fast and inconsiderate changes. The system doesn’t secure people from authoritarian leaders, but it does provide the limitation and clear transition of power.
And this is the rock build for people like Donald Trump, to collide with the rock while paddling its delusion at full speed. It is possible to bring down any system, but the current system in the US is harder to break. Countries like Turkey, Russia, or even the UK, would already be firmly under Trump’s boot, with no clear end in sight. In the UK there’s an assumption that the politicians will behave themselves, but if they don’t, authoritarianism is wide open. We sought that during the prorogation of the UK Parliament last year. In Turkey or Russia, Donald Trump would be just another authoritarian leader. That’s not possible in the US.
But that didn’t prevent Trump to misuse power. He was all-in in his delusion that he is above the law. The institutions which stood in his way become known as Deep State, the Swamp, the ominous remark which should delegitimize the rule of law. It’s a psychological trick to band the adversary. It’s something Trump probably did multiple times in his career in real estate: selling the delusion, smoke-and-mirrors, dodge the law. Cheap show, humiliation, and the power of will should overcome any obstacle. You just need to be “smart” enough to avoid real consequences. The defeat only exists if you accept it. The position in power only amplifies these traits. Intellectually, Trump always knew his presidency would come to an end sooner or later, except the impression was different: Sleepy Joe, Crazy Bernie, Crazy Nancy, Stone Cold Loser (Mayer of London), Little Pencil Neck, etc, etc, etc. This is the illusion the power gives if you don’t know how to use it, you become too embroiled in the lack of accountability. It’s a bubble, an illusion that has nothing to do with reality. A hammer is not for idle people who think it’s for breaking people’s heads, but to nail where it needs to.
And after four years of undermining the rule of law, being above others, putting ad hoc for the show, the game comes to an end. The defeat. Sobering reality hoarsely pervading in the head: it’s over. It was exciting to watch the overall melting: stop the count! Stop the steal! Same manner, the same stupid slogans which sound too good when you’re on the top and surround yourself only with the one who cheers or approves. You’re too powerful to think that something like defeat is possible. But it’s not funny anymore, and for a month or two, no one would care or even less find it funny. With every counted vote, the difference between Trump and Biden is only widening. It’s becoming absurd even for Trump to call it “rigged”, while Biden leading with over five million votes. And even if he doesn’t care about the popular vote, he needs to overturn at least three states somehow. And the difference in these states is not even small. In Florida in 2000, the initial count put Bush less than 2000 votes above Gore. In Pennsylvania, the state he must overturn somehow, the gap is over 60 000 votes and increasing.
Now, the only thing left to Trump is to plan a new campaign for the 2024 election. If this illusion is a temporary compensation for the current defeat, this hope could fix his ego for a while. But in the long term, won’t happen! One of the illusions Trump created is that he is the strongest Republican candidate by far. The one with no competitors in sight. But this is everything except the truth. This defeat is Trump’s sole defeat, but not the defeat of the Republican Party. He only made things harder for them. Big defeat in the midterm in the House in 2018 was only thanks to Trump, and now he lost the presidency with over 5 million votes nationally; nationally, even the first race was very bad in the popular vote, something which does matter for the party. Overall, he was a weak candidate from the get-go. With the last hysteric absurdity, he nailed down the last nails in his coffin. This guy is too crazy even for the Republican Party.
